Life with kids is full of obstacles and adventures, and having a few essential oils on hand can help you with both. While there are many different holistic options from which to choose, I encourage my patients’ parents to utilize high quality essential oils as a front line defense for every day challenges. These oils are easily accessible, simple to use, made with all natural ingredients, and are highly effective. Here are several recipes that can be used to help overcome everyday kid chaos.

Home, Holistic and Helpful.

Fever: Combine 1-2 drops of peppermint oil diluted with a carrier oil, such as coconut or avocado oil, and rub on the bottom of your child’s feet. Apply this every 15-30 minutes as needed.

Skin irritation: For bug bites and other irritants, mix lavender and tea tree oil, diluted with a carrier oil, and apply to the affected area. Reapply every 5-10 minutes as needed.

Sunburn: In a 2oz spray bottle, mix 20 drops each of lavender and peppermint oil. Add 1 oz of natural Aloe Vera gel, and fill the rest
of the bottle with purified water. Spray on affected area.

Seasonal Allergies: Mix equal parts lemon, lavender, and peppermint oils in a roller bottle, and fill the rest of thebottle with a carrier oil. Roll over bridge of nose and temples. Mixture may also be diffused in a cool mist humidifier.

Eczema: Apply a mix of coriander and a carrier oil topically to affected area for relief.

Diaper Rash: Combine 1 drop roman chamomile and 1 drop lavender with 1 teaspoon fractionated coconut oil, and apply to diaper area.

Lice prevention spray: In a 4oz spray bottle, add 4 drops of tea tree oil and 3 drops of lavender. Fill the rest of the bottle with water and spray daily on hair.

Respiratory symptoms: Diffuse eucalyptus at night while child is sleeping to relieve airway inflammation.

Fussy baby: Combine 1 drop of roman chamomile, 1 drop of lavender and 1 drop of geranium oil with a car- rier oil, and apply to baby’s stomach and back. Reapply as needed every 15-30 minutes.

Constipation: Use rosemary, ginger or orange oil diluted with a carrier oil to massage on stomach as needed.

Equipping parents with some natural tools prevents having to use harsh lotions or topicals on tender skin. Life is always an adventure. Arm yourself with natural solutions and face each day knowing you’re doing your best to take care of life’s greatest gifts – your children.

Disclaimer: Use essential oils with knowledge and caution. Before using essential oil tips, please learn about warnings for usage (including dos- ages, usage frequency and “hot oil” application methods) either through the many available resources or consult with a doctor.
